Giving alms directly to beggars increase the attractiveness of begging, driving up supply for the job (yes, begging is a job). This can in the end crowd out people with absolutely no alternative than begging, as well as endangering poor children. This is what would happen if your intention for charity is based on purely selfish motive, i.e. make yourself feel good and secure a nice spot in heaven.

During the holy month of Ramadhan, ironically, households increase consumption and drive up demand, thus increase price. The main victims of this higher inflation are the poor. Increased redistribution of wealth--another Ramadhan-induced economic phenomenon--doesn't even begin to counteract the negative impact of inflation on the poorest households. The fact is, the middle and upper classes would actually help the poor more by not spending than by giving during Ramadhan.
